FIFA World Cup 2026 Groups Explained – All 48 Teams and What to Expect

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is unlike anything we have seen before. With 48 nations competing across 12 groups, there are more storylines, more rivalries, and more football than ever before. Here is your complete guide to all 12 groups and what to expect from each one.

How Does the 2026 World Cup Group Stage Work?

FIFA World Cup 2026 features 12 groups of four teams each. Every team plays three group stage matches — one against each other team in their group. Teams earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically advance to the Round of 32. In addition, the 8 best third-placed teams from across all 12 groups also qualify for the knockout rounds. This means 32 teams total advance from the group stage.

Group A – Mexico, South Africa, Algeria, Paraguay

Group A is headlined by hosts Mexico, who will be playing on home soil at the famous Estadio Azteca. Mexico are always strong at home World Cups and will be strongly favored to advance. South Africa, Algeria and Paraguay will all be competitive, making this group entertaining. Mexico open the entire tournament against South Africa on June 11.

Group B – Argentina, Canada, Chile, Angola

This is one of the most exciting groups. Defending World Cup champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, are heavy favorites to win the group. However, hosts Canada — playing their first World Cup in decades — will be energized by their passionate home support. Chile are always dangerous in South American competition while Angola are making only their second World Cup appearance.

Group C – Germany, Japan, Czech Republic, Bahrain

Germany and Japan are the clear favorites in Group C. These two sides actually met at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — Japan famously beat Germany in one of the biggest upsets of that tournament. A rematch in 2026 would be electric. Czech Republic are experienced European campaigners while Bahrain are making their World Cup debut.

Group D – Spain, USA, Australia, Turkey

Group D is perhaps the most watched group of all given that it features host nation USA alongside top-ranked Spain. The United States will have enormous home support at games in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Spain are the world’s number one ranked team and strong favorites, but USA will be desperate to make a big impression on home soil. Australia and Turkey add further quality to what promises to be a thrilling group.

Group E – France, Denmark, China, Uzbekistan

France are the overwhelming favorites in Group E. The 2018 World Cup winners have a squad packed with world-class talent led by Kylian Mbappe. Denmark are solid European opponents while China and Uzbekistan will be playing in their respective first or rare World Cup appearances, making this a learning experience for both Asian nations.

Group F – England, Croatia, Senegal, New Zealand

England versus Croatia is a rematch of the 2018 World Cup semi-final, which Croatia won. England will be desperate for revenge and are considered strong favorites to top the group. Senegal, led by Ballon d’Or contender Sadio Mane’s generation of talent, are capable of causing upsets. New Zealand make a rare World Cup appearance.

Group G – Brazil, Morocco, Slovakia, Costa Rica

Brazil are five-time World Cup winners and always considered favorites. After a disappointing 2022 tournament, Brazil will be hungry to go deep in 2026. Morocco are perhaps the biggest threat — they reached the semi-finals of Qatar 2022 and have continued to develop. Slovakia and Costa Rica will be competitive but face a tough task against these two giants.

Group H – Portugal, DR Congo, Austria, Jordan

Portugal are led by one of the greatest players of all time and will be strong favorites to top Group H. Austria have been improving steadily and could surprise. DR Congo are Africa’s wildcard while Jordan are making waves in Asian football.

Groups I through L

The remaining groups feature Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Uruguay — all former World Cup winners or regular contenders — alongside a mix of exciting newcomers and returning nations from Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Key Group Stage Dates

The group stage runs from June 11 to June 27, 2026. All group stage matches take place across the 16 host stadiums in USA, Mexico and Canada. The Round of 32 begins on June 28, 2026.
